Fler trafikolyckor skulle kunna undvikas om bilen varnade föraren för fotgängare och cyklister. Det fastslår GM, som nu utvecklar ett system som ska göra just detta.
Men för fotgängare och cyklister kan det vara lite för tidigt att få upp hoppet om en säkrare trafik. Systemet kommer nämligen bara att upptäcka dem om de har en smartphone.
Systemet bygger på tekniken Wi-Fi direct, som låter teknik som exempelvis smartphones kommunicera med varandra utan att gå via mobilmaster. Med Wi-Fi direct tar det cirka en sekund för två enheter att koppla upp sig mot varandra, jämfört med åtta sekunder via mobilnätet, vilket är avgörande för att GM-systemet ska fungera ur trafiksäkerhetssynpunkt.

Syftet med GM-systemet är att upptäcka till exempel fotgängare som kommer ut bakom en parkerad bil och cyklister som befinner sig i förarens döda vinkel.
GM planerar också att utveckla en mobilapp som låter ägaren definiera sig som till exempel byggnadsarbetare eller cykelbud. Syftet är att ge ytterligare information till den som kör en bil som utrustats med säkerhetssystemet.
Det nya systemet är en del av GM:s satsning på funktioner som låter bilen kommunicera med andra fordon och med infrastrukturen.
