Någon tyckte i alla fall att Steve McQueens racingoverall från filmen Le Mans kunde vara värd 984 000 dollar, motsvarande cirka 6,5 miljoner kronor, för att få hänga i den egna garderoben.
Kanske var det samme köpare som för några månader sedan ropade hem den Porsche 911 McQueen kör i filmens inledning? Den gick för, jämfört med overallen, relativt futtiga 1,25 miljoner dollar, 8,3 miljoner kronor.
Auktionen, där massor av roliga filmhistoriska prylar ropades ut, kallades Profiles in History, och det förväntade slutpriset på overallen var inte mer än cirka 300 000 dollar. Rena realisationspriset alltså.

Jag gillar Steve McQueen. Han hade förresten en förbannad otur. Han dog bara 50 år gammal av cancertumörer som orsakats av asbestdamm, något han antagligen hade utsatts för ombord på fartyg under sin tid i amerikanska marinkåren. Asbesten kan också ha kommit från isolering i skyddskläder under Steves tid som racerförare, eller från ljudisolering i filmbranschen. (Asbest användes ju överallt förr, till och med i kakelfogar!) Tumörerna hade metastaserats i halsen och överkroppen och var mycket stora. Han dog år 1980 i Mexiko.
