Då elmotorer är väldigt tysta kan det vara svårt för fotgängare att märka när en elbil närmar sig. För att undvika olyckor planerar nu Audi att utrusta kommande e-tron-modeller (som Audi kallar sina elkonceptbilar) med ett ljudsystem, kallat e-sound.
En dator genererar ljud baserat på signaler från bilen och en högtalare som byggts in i underredet spelar upp ljudsignaturer som tagits fram av ljudavdelningen hos Audi, Audi Acoustics.
– Vi kommer förmodligen att behöva varningsljud endast upp till 30 kilometer i timmen. Vid högre hastigheter genererar däcken tillräckligt med ljud, säger Ralf Kunkel, chef för Audi Acoustics.
Ljuden beskrivs som musik inspirerade av tonerna från en förbränningsmotor såväl som från ljud i science-fictionfilmer. Så förutom säkerhetsbiten handlar det alltså om att ljuden ska vara en del av körupplevelsen.
En av Audis konceptelbilar, en R8 e-tron, har utrustats med ett V8-inspirerat sportbilsljud som känner av hur mycket föraren trycker på gasen och tanken är att varje e-tron-modell ska få sitt eget unika ljud.
Elbilstillverkaren Fisker använder ett liknande system på sina elbilar.
